Briefly about the excursion

Distance education "The Phenomenon of the Temporary Capital" is intended for students in grades 7-12 to familiarize themselves with the history of the Temporary Capital.

A few facts:

  • bullet Kaunas was the temporary capital of Lithuania from 1919 to 1940.
  • bullet The President of the Republic, the Government, and the Seimas worked here.
  • bullet During the interwar period, about 11 thousand buildings were built, and the Žaliakalnis and Aleksotas funiculars were installed.
  • bullet Kaunas' central city street was named Laisvės alėja on February 16, 1919.
  • bullet In 1939, there were 16 stationary cinemas and several dozen halls and summer cinemas operating in Kaunas.
  • bullet More than 6,000 buildings designed in the spirit of modernism have survived to this day.
  • bullet The LITAS became the official currency of Lithuania on October 1, 1922. In 1922, when the Seimas was considering the names of new money, a number of proposals were made for how Lithuania could name the newly created money: auksinas, arfs, doleris, grāšis, kaltais, kirptukais, lietais, litas, litas, lyras, markēs, muštukas, rubliās, vyčiais. Two options received the most support from supporters: muštukas and litas. With 32 votes to 16, the name litas won during a vote held in the Seimas – it was easier for foreigners to pronounce. On October 2, 1922, the exchange rate of the litas to the US dollar was set at a ratio of 10:1. On June 20, 1924, the Seimas adopted the Law on Coins, which allowed the minting of coins, including those made of precious metals. The design of the coins was entrusted to the sculptor Juozas Zikaras. The competition for the production of coins was won by King’s Norton Metal Works from Birmingham. And on February 2, 1925, the coins appeared in circulation, replacing paper money of the same denomination.
  • bullet By listening to stories and looking at photos together with the guide, students will learn about interwar Kaunas, get acquainted with important historical buildings, interesting historical facts, and the most famous people. The educator will invite the young people to get involved and answer questions using critical thinking.
The guide communicates with the students directly via the Zoom platform at a pre-arranged time.
