Straw gardens are a type of traditional Lithuanian decorative art. They are ornaments made of straw in strict geometric shapes. The most common straw gardens have the structure of a four-sided pyramid and its more complex versions.
The gardens are made from dry grains or reeds, which are associated with death and eternity. It is believed that golden-coloured stems accumulate a lot of energy from the sun and bring happiness and harmony to one’s home.
Making a garden requires diligence, patience, and a calm state of mind. Researchers of ethnic culture perceive gardens as a spatial model of the world. The straw garden symbolises the world: the sky, the heaven, and the afterworld. The garden not only represents cosmic harmony but also creates it.
