The tour “The Phenomenon of temporary capital”

The tour “The Phenomenon of Temporary Capital” is about the fact that when Kaunas became a temporary capital, it had to be… built. This tour is about the phenomenal development of Kaunas city from 1919 to 1940, as well as its architecture, culture, and people’s lives.

A few facts:

Kaunas was the temporary capital of Lithuania from 1919 to 1940.

The president of the Republic, the government, and the parliament used to work here.

Around 11,000 buildings were built during the interwar period, and the funiculars of Žaliakalnis and Aleksotas were set up.

The central street of Kaunas was named Liberty Avenue on 16 February 1919.

In 1939, there were 16 stationary cinemas, a dozen cinema halls, and summer cinemas.

More than 6000 modernist buildings remain standing to this day.

Due to its unique concentration, the modernist architecture of Kaunas was inscribed on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list.

We invite you to see and get to know interwar Kaunas!
